Dark & Stormies - Need an Opinion

Post by Big Green PH »

1 Part Gosling's Black Rum
2 Parts Ginger Beer

I'm sure most BNers know what the drink is. The important question is: is it one that can/should be consumed during the tailgate at the concert? It's definitely a great island rum drink, but I'm not sure it's the best for big parties, etc. Any thoughts?

I don't see any reason not to enjoy them at a tailgate party. 8)

The biggest problem is usually finding the Ginger Beer.

I made homemade ginger beer and took it to a small party- Tom and I were the only ones who touched it. If it's your drink of choice, then bring the ingredients for you, but don't count on a lot of people drinking it.

Probably a good point. They're delicious, but somewhat of an acquired taste too

A local (Central PA) grocery chain recently began carrying Reeds Ginger Beer. One of the best I have found around here.

My dad is a big Dark and Stormy drinker during the summer. I asked him this question, he looked at me and said "Why not"...

Gosling's now make Ginger Beer as well. Most good liquor stores carry it, but Trader Joes and/or Whole Foods usually have a small selection. I tried a Dark and Story recently using Maui Dark Rum in place of Gosling's Black Seal. It kicked ass!

I love, love, love Santa's Dark and Stormies ... and I rarely drink. If I had access to them on a regular basis, I would probably be a lush.

I don't think they do any more- it's being replaced with the Goslings.

We've been making ours with Coruba lately. I like it.

Did I tell you I finally perfected my ginger beer recipe? I use 2 cups of sugar, about a half pound of ginger (before peeling) and the juice of two lemons in about 8 cups of water. I use my immersion blender to roughly break up the ginger, then let it simmer on the stove for 30 minutes and leave it alone until it's cool. I then strain it into a cleaned, sanitized 2 liter bottle with 1/4 tsp of yeast, add water to fill the bottle, then put the cap on and leave it out until it's carbonated (1-2 days-make sure you sanitize the funnel/strainer as well), then put it in the fridge.

Yeah, it seems that Barrittt's and Goslings had a falling-out of sorts. Barritts is now distributed my North American Bevergae in the States. Barritts is offering a diet version now and it rocks.
