But my college was not competitive in the big 2- football & basketball (we did well in soccer & lacrosse) at all. Jim went to St. John's when the Redmen did well in basketball back in the Carneseca era, so that was about it. That was it until my son went off to Purdue, and college football (and basketball, too) held my interest. My daughter went to McGill, so for her it was following collegiate hockey, which was a pretty big thing here in New England anyway!
And I never went to college. Neither did my sister, one brother went into the Navy, one brother didn't go to college, and my last brother went to Northern Illinois University. Not a huge sports school back then.

Working with the tribal (local) vibe makes some sense to me, thanks.

I think that Australians (or downunderers as someone here said) don't get some of the hype is that we have a number of things we call "footy" (or football). Australian Rules Football (aka AFL), Rugby Leagues (aka League), Rugby Union (aka Rugby or Union), Football (aka Soccer) and a couple of minor hybrids of league and union. AFL and League are the top two.

The popularity of each footy is geographical based mostly along state lines.

While there are second tier competitions in each, only the top grades are the TV games.

I think the easy answer is that there are 138 Division I college football teams (and more than 770 college teams, when you include Division II, Division III, Junior Colleges, etc.) and so there are many millions of alumni who have a vested interest in “their” teams… (alumni pride, school loyalty, school and regional rivalries, etc.). For the 32 NFL (professional) teams, I think their fandom is based on regional pride more than anything else.

Edit: Oops! Penny and AI beat me to it!

That Al guy is working his way into our lives more and more! I had a conversation with someone at my mailorder pharmacy the other day and I'm still not sure if I spoke with a real person or a computer....
