Update on grags site for downloading

Ok, here's the link to download the concerts, but first just a couple clarifications, etc.

First, I will only make concerts available in MP3 format. We could start a whole other forum just on the debate of WAV vs MP3 format, so let's not go there. I can offer the maximum amount of concerts for download if I use MP3. All the CDs that I've ever gotten I've ripped to MP3 (or AAC) to listen to on my iPod anyway, and I've not been able to tell the difference. And finally, you're not getting a CD- or studio-quality feed from Radio Margaritaville anyway, so don't sweat it. So, it's going to be MP3...if you want something else, you'll need to work with someone else on trading CDs, etc.

Whew. Good thing that's out of the way!! Now for the fun stuff...

Currently, the only concert up there right now is Alpine Valley 2004. Early next week, I will add Alpine 1999-2003. I also expect to get some more shows from this years tour from RMM in the next few days, so I will make those available whence I get them.

Access to these files is via FTP. You can use any FTP client that you'd like, or your Internet Explorer web browser.

The address for the site is:

ftp://198.177.95.252
login: ftp
password: your e-mail address

If you use an FTP client, the address above is the same, just lose the ftp:// part.

Due to the amount of people that are going to see this, I realistically cannot offer explicit instructions for those that want to use an FTP client or have never heard of it. If you put the link above into your web browser, it should work. I tested it from home last nite and had no problems.

You will see folders that should be self-explanatory each time you access the site. I double check what I have with what the track list was, as reported here on BN. Check back often to see what's added. I will try to post an update here when I add something when I can, but I make no promises.

Please leave me a PM if the site is unavailable, as it should be up all the time.

Also, if anyone has anything that they'd like to share, PM me and I will work with you to get it uploaded to the site.

Enjoy!!

Has anyone been able to connect to this site (with or without a client)?

And, BTW, thank you for hosting this grags!

Ok, we'll just chalk it up to *ahem* operator error. I gave you the wrong address.

Try: ftp://198.177.95.252

I suspected as much when I couldn't ping the site, but didn't want to say anything. :)

Thanks again - working perfectly now!

Kudos to both Grags and RMM for their effort in this endeavor. You are gentlemen and scholars!

I do have a question though, does making these concerts available online pass muster for copyright purposes? I know it's easy enough to record these when they happen live (or on a replay) on RM, but I seem to remember that another website that tried posting concerts that had to stop due to copyright BS. Just wonderin'

Thanks again!

Thanks for hosting the mp3s, I'd really like a copy of my first Buffett show! However, I can't connect to it. I think that the firewall here at my college is preventing me. Is someone able to just post the mp3s on a normal website?
Anyway, I'll keep trying.
Thanks again to RMM and Grags!

I accessed the FTP at 2:00pm central and it worked perfectly... Awesome speed. Thanks a lot for doing this. You should open it up for people to upload their concerts to it so you can offer a lot more than just the one alpine show.

I personally don't see why this would be illegal, if the operator would take down the mp3s of a particular show if that show was going to be released on cd. If you can get these songs by a B&P or a trade legally then you should be able to download them... maybe i'm wrong, maybe i'm right, just my 2 cents

THANKS AGAIN

I don't believe that there should be any copyright issues, as these aren't being sold or canibalizing sales of something else. The exception might be the official live CDs that Mailboat puts out, but those are pro quality anyway.

I will honor any requests to remove the site or songs therein if I am contacted by any official body representing JB.

Also, I don't want to make the site wide open to upload, so I'm discussing with people individually on doing that. If you have something to send me, PM me and we'll talk.

I'm getting "Operation timed out" and incorrect user name and password.

I've tried it with and without the firewall. Not sure what else to do?

CAN'T LOG IN - SHOULD I START A TREE?

Sorry for the aggravation, people. I have not checked with Grags, but I can't download it, either. I would bet that he has shut down the site temporarily while we find out if we're going to be allowed to continue with it or not.

I have been told that trading, etc., is tolerated, but that an open downloading site might not be (probably due to the ease with which large numbers of people could access these concerts). Right now, there really aren't that large a number of concerts floating around in trees, etc.. So, check back in a day or two and we'll hopefully have a definitive answer.

In the meantime, I am only mailing out concerts (and I have a backlog, so it may be a few days). Alpine is edited (and it's a pretty good recording, IMHO) and I did post it to the ftp site.

I even went back and posted the interview before the concert (very short, though), a different version of Hot, Hot, Hot (with Steve talking into it because the start caught him off guard - I had edited out that part in the first version, but Grags said it might be good to have the entire song, even with his talking.), a different recording of "Jump In The Line", and a minute or so where Steve talks about how popular Alpine Valley is with the acts. The nice thing about downloading is that you could just go and get the files and then assemble the CD YOU want.

Should I start a tree? I do expect an answer sometime this week, but can't guarantee it. Of course, a tree would take a while to work its' way down the list, which is exactly why we wanted to set up a download site.

I can even print a set of inserts on white paper that recipients could just xerox onto colored paper (what I have been doing) for a nice looking insert (front page and song and time listings only).

Yup, it seems like when I have seen this type of set-up before it usually gets shut down by JB's people. Nobody has ever seemed to care about trading the shows, but they sure don't like the downloading idea.

I'd bet that you'll have to stick to the old-fashioned methods of obtaining shows.

maybe keep this on the DL, though verifying users would be a pain. Good luck guys.

Sorry, I've been busy yesterday guys. Someone unplugged my server, but it's back up and running this morning.

I'm going to add the other Alpine shows today, but I think that's pretty much where we're going to leave it for now, until RMM gets more info. I'm not really interested in a lawsuit from JB.
