Okay ... here's what my mama says ... she threw a KD party each year ... and made MJs by the gallon ....

Use good bourbon
Use fresh mint - she soaked her springs in whiskey overnight
Don't make them too sugary - kills the bourbon buzz
Use crushed ice, not cubes
Use branch water, if available ... (still water, not bubbly)

One more thing ...

If everyone brings their own silver chalice, it makes for a lovely picture during the first toast ...

My mama took everyone's cup as they arrived and stuck them in the freezer for about 5 minutes ... not enough to freeze their fingers, but nice and chilly ...

Good luck.

From kentuckyderby.com...I guess for a large batch multiply by 10?

The Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

* 2 cups sugar
* 2 cups water
* Sprigs of fresh mint
* Crushed ice
* Early Times Kentucky Whisky
* Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Don't mix a gallon batch, make the sugar water w/mint in advance and let it chill. Poured the minted sugar water into bottles, we used quart squirt bottles.

Add shaved ice to a glass (silver chalice as ETMM recommended), pour in the bourbon, squirt in a little sugar water add a mint sprig.

Mojito's the same way, not to great made by the gallon... except ETMM drinks them by the gallon..... that's alot of muddled mint.......

I don't care for mint. Pour me the bourbon over ice and I'd be happy.

With any drink....use a good quality bourbon and you should be fine. They aren't hard to make or require rocket science like a pousse-café.
