Nope...it's a classic for a reason....and made quite often for parties around here. It translates well to a punch bowl service as well.
However....I do think that Jack Daniels provides a specific taste that is often the best. Generic bourbon isn't the same. Another sour mash whiskey (because JD is NOT a bourbon) or even an actual bourbon or blended whiskey will provide good results, it won't be the same as Jack Daniels and a true Lynchburg lemonade (though it can be quite tasty).
While some triple secs are better then others....really, I can't imagine specifying the triple sec and not the main liquor ingredient.

JD is my adult bev of choice( no hangovers or getting sick for me)........and now its great in BQ sauces toooo.
Been to Lynchburg to see where it all began - very interesting. Only disappointing thing was L'burg is Dry county......WTF is with that?

No samples and could not purchase it. At least at Makers Mark you can dip your bottle in wax to seal it, date it and take it home for a higher price.

I have not had one of those since college. Looking back at every drink that has come and gone since then-it's really the orginal mal-ternative...

something to know..
I fell on a heater (face first, tongue out) when I was learning to walk
of course.. being the sixtys.. my Mothers friend grabbed me and slapped butter on it..
A I have to sit and wait for food to cool ( Ice cubes in Coffee??)
B. I don't taste things the same way as most pholks..
I can taste the difference in Triple sec.. I really can't taste the difference
between Jim Beam, Old Crow and Jack Daniels..
Swiss Cheese makes me Ill.. But I love Provolone..
I don't taste White sugar in a dish (orCoffee) until
there is enough to gag most pholks..
( I use brown.. or add Molasses)
OH yeah.. I prefer Spearmint Schnapps to Peppermint..
so that might answer your question..
