Recording Help

Post by sharp1 »

Hey everyone I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm new to recording and need to know if there is anything i can use to record a show i will be at. Let me explain. We are going to the West Palm Beach show in April and it will be the first show for my mother in law father in law and both my daughters. I think it would be great to be able to have a disc of the show for them. Is there a program to not only record but to set up a timer also? I believe audacity will split the songs but not sure about the recording and timer part. Thanks in advance for the help

If it is on RM, there will be a download available by the time you wake up. I would put money on it, but I am still waiting for the chance to by tickets for a show that hasn't been announced yet.

There should be three places to download from the concert trading forum on this site, Jokelben FTP server and SunLovers FTP server.

But if you REALLY REALLY want to record it yourself eventhough it will be available on BN, you can use Total Recorder by High Criteria, which has a timer, etc!

Video Pro Edition also allows you record video from screen or a video device like web cam or TV tuner. Convenient and powerful scheduler allows you to record when you can't be at your computer.

I can also recommend the Replay tools by Applian, similar to Total Recorder already mentioned.

Has anyone ever tried recording a show at the concert. You know, like actual tapers do?

Just curious, I've heard audience recorded tapes that sounded much better than some live albums I've listened to. I've always wondered why there are rarely any audience tapes out there of Buffett, especially when recordings of his concerts seem to be in such high demand. In other words, he doesn't seem to have much of a taper following in the manner of bands such as Widespread Panic, Pearl Jam, Furthur, etc. despite the popularity of trading his live shows. And yes, I'm aware of Radio Margaritaville but most of the shows I've heard that people have recorded off of their computers don't hold up in quality to some actual live recordings I've heard.

The answer to the lack of shows recorded live at the venues is due to the fact that so-called "taping" of the shows is not allowed by Jimmy himself. I have attended quite a few Buffett shows over the last two decades and do not recall anyone "taping" the shows.

Makes sense because of Radio Margaritaville but even when there's a no taping policy in effect at other shows I've attended (like the Black Crowes for example) it still doesn't stop the hardcore tapers from recording.

I have a number of obviously taped shows from back in the 70s and 80s. Where/how would a taper know if Jimmy "allowed" it or not? Not sure I've heard an official statement.

Maybe too many people spilled drinks on their recording devices so they stopped doing it ;)

If it wasn't for RM and the hard work from two PH's, I certainly would have missed some great shows. I know I am stereotyping a bit, but I just can't see someone going in with a recorder to a JB show. I go to have to have a good time and kick back for a few hours (ok, a few days). If I went with a recorder, that would be too much like work.

As far as the sound goes, I have heard some good concert recordings and some really bad ones. I don't know if it has to do with the recorder or the sound at the venue.

I have no idea but for some artists/venues it's written on the ticket. If there's ever any question one could always ask the soundman. Oftentimes, some artists allow tapers to make recordings directly though the soundboard. If not, they're granted permission to do audience recordings and/or a mix of the two.

Agreed, which is why I'm glad a taping community exists. Some people also record concerts visually. I could never go to a concert only to stare through a video screen the entire time. I've just always wondered why a taping community doesn't exist among Buffett fans particularly when there's such a high demand for recordings of his concerts. It's not the same as RM but artists such as the Black Crowes and Todd Snider make their concerts available online for purchase but that doesn't stop fans from taping their concerts. It seems like as popular as having recordings of Buffett's concerts are amongst his fanbase that there would be a taping community much as there is for Widespread Panic, Phish, Furthur, etc.

Five consecutive Black Crowes setlists from December.
Hardly a repeat song in the bunch.

This may have something to do with their fanbase having a bigger obsession to tape their shows.
It may not. Whatever.

If I remember correctly, I heard that Linkin Park allowed concert goers to download a copy of their live shows a few years back.

I haven't had a current password sent to me for over a month from him. I downloaded the Nascar ZBB show and the download was all messed up. Went to try and get the tracks that I am missing and no go.
